Ghana’s leading life insurance company, GLICO General Insurance has presented a total of GH¢2 million in insurance benefits and donations to families of the “Gallant Eight.”
The “Gallant Eight” refers to eight prominent figures who were tragically killed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, while traveling to an event in Obuasi.
The presentation took place at the company’s head-office in Adabraka, on August 22, 2025, and was attended by high-ranking government officials, military representatives, bereaved families, and media personnel.
The company distributed the funds with GH¢1.8 million going directly to the beneficiaries of the eight deceased officials. An additional GH¢100,000 was donated to the President’s Children’s Trust Fund, and another GH¢100,000 was given to the Ghana Armed Forces.
The Managing Director (MD) of GLICO General Insurance, Andrew Achampong-Kyei, in remarks at the event said the presentation was a matter of duty and compassion. He added that the nation has lost dedicated people and their families need to feel that they are not alone.
According to him, the two ministers among the ‘Gallant Eight’ had been covered under a personal accident policy offered by the company.
He added that: “GLICO extended donations to the other six families in the spirit of the Akan proverb: “Agya bi wu a, agya bi te ase,” meaning, “When one father dies, another father lives. And also the support for the President’s Children’s Trust Fund will help care for dependents going forward.”
The MD honoured the sacrifice of the eight men, saying: “They were fathers, sons, brothers, leaders, but above all, they were citizens who loved their nation enough to serve it, even at risk to themselves.”
Furthermore, he emphasised GLICO’s long-standing commitment to corporate social responsibility, noting that for over 40 years, it has worked to cushion individuals through insurance and community support.
“We have stood with communities through education support, scholarships, and literacy campaigns. We have stood with families through life and health insurance that provided medical access and dignity in illness.
“We have stood with businesses and institutions through general policies – protecting homes, shielding vehicles, underwriting liability for events, covering risks for sportsmen, and designing innovative packages to meet emerging needs. This tradition of care is our DNA, and it has shaped our purpose: to cushion you for life,” he elaborated.
Achampong-Kyei also used the occasion to call for stronger national commitment to insurance preparedness. “We cannot, as a people, allow insurance to remain optional, partial, or selective. Preparedness must become the standard, not the exception,” he said.
He urged the government to enforce existing insurance laws for public assets and servants, and encouraged insurers to collaborate through co-insurance and reinsurance to spread risk.
“No one insurer can carry the weight of a national tragedy. But together- insurers, co-insurers, reinsurers, and government- we can,” he said.
Shamima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, in her address commended GLICO for its generosity toward families not covered by the policy.
She also called for sensitivity and privacy for the bereaved families, especially from the media. “Let us protect them and allow them some privacy in their time of grief,” she noted.
Moreover, she encouraged other institutions and the public to support the families and the Children’s Trust Fund.
Dr. Abiba Zakariah, CEO of National Insurance Commission (NIC), lauded GLICO for honoring its promises and emphasised the collective spirit of insurance.
“The purpose of insurance is to be there when the challenge happens,” she said.
She called on society to support the mission of insurance by participating in the risk-sharing process.
A speech was also read on behalf of Kwame Achampong-Kyei, Chairman of GLICO Group, by Edward Forkuo-Kyei- Group CEO
He expressed the company’s condolences and reaffirmed its vision to provide support through insurance to those in need.
“May the memories of the Gallant Eight remain with us always and be a reminder of loyalty, humility, and love for Ghana,” he said.
The “Gallant Eight” included: Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed.
The rest are: National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong; Deputy Director-General of NADMO, Samuel Aboagye; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
