Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep disappointment over the attack that was launched against Madam Hawa Koomson, former Minister for Fisheries, during last Friday’s rerun of parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency.
“Such violence has no place in Ghana’s democracy”, he said, when he visited the NPP firebrand at her home to sympathise with her.
Dr Bawmia also demanded a full probe into the incident to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The visit comes in the wake of reports that Hawa Koomson was physically assaulted, in what the opposition has described as a coordinated attack, allegedly involving individuals affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Hawa Koomson, a former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, was among several New Patriotic Party (NPP) officials reportedly targeted during the disruption of the rerun election.
According to the Minority in Parliament, the attack on her formed part of a broader pattern of electoral violence aimed at intimidating NPP figures and disrupting the democratic process.
Dr Bawumia’s visit was widely viewed as an expression of solidarity and concern for her well-being.
Former Vice President Bawumia also visited Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, and several polling agents who were assaulted during the constituency’s parliamentary rerun.
Dr Bawumia, who visited the injured at a private medical facility in Accra on Sunday, expressed solidarity with the victims and commended their courage in the face of what he described as “unprovoked and unacceptable violence.”
He condemned the attacks as a threat to Ghana’s democracy and reaffirmed his party’s commitment to peaceful and lawful electoral processes.
“No one should suffer such brutality for simply participating in a democratic process. We will ensure their hospital bills are taken care of and that justice is pursued through the appropriate channels,” he stated.
