A 33-year-old hairdresser, Akos Sewonyadzi, has been granted bail by the Greater Accra Circuit Court after she was charged with defrauding a businessman of GH¢498,000.00 under false pretences.
According to court records, Sewonyadzi is accused of deceiving the complainant, Gershion Nutsuakor, into supplying her with large quantities of foodstuffs in September 2024.
She allegedly claimed that her husband was a senior military officer at Burma Camp who had secured a government contract to supply food items.
The complainant and his wife, Veronica Dagodzo, reportedly agreed to the arrangement and supplied Sewonyadzi with assorted food items valued at GH¢98,000.
However, the accused allegedly failed to make payment within the agreed two-week period and subsequently became unreachable.
A formal complaint was lodged at the Accra Central Police Station on October 30, 2024. The accused was later arrested on December 20, 2024.
During police interrogation, she admitted to taking delivery of the items, stating the total value was GH¢130,000 and that she had made partial payments totaling GH¢32,000.
She paid GH¢11,000 in cash on December 23, 2024, and January 9, 2025, which was returned to the complainant. Despite promising to settle the outstanding balance within two weeks, she failed to do so.
The case was first called on March 26, 2025, and again on April 16, 2025, but the accused was absent on both dates.
A bench warrant was subsequently issued for her arrest. She was finally brought before the court on June 10, 2025, and her plea was taken on June 12, after the charges and facts were explained to her in Ewe.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretence, contrary to Section 135(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Given the accused’s initial failure to appear in court, she was remanded into custody as a potential flight risk.
However, during a bail hearing on July 12, 2025, Her Honour Sedinam A. Kwadam granted Sewonyadzi bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 with three sureties, one of which must be justified with immovable property.
As part of her bail conditions, the accused is required to report to the case investigator every Monday and Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and is prohibited from leaving the jurisdiction.
The court also directed the prosecution to serve all disclosures and witness statements on the defence.
The case has been adjourned to August 21, 2025, for continuation of the trial.
