A mason, said to be in his early forties, has died in Sewua in the Ashanti region after a two-story building he was working on collapsed on him.
The mason, identified as Kwaku Gyemfi, who was the lead constructor at the site, was working with his assistant, believed to be eighteen years old.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased went to the site on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, to construct new pillars to support some collapsing ones and parts of the building which had cracks.
While work was ongoing, his assistant alerted him that part of the building was falling in his direction, but unfortunately, Kwaku Gyemfi was trapped with the structure collapsing on him.
Eyewitnesses further disclosed that the building, owned by his brother-in-law, had initially been started by another contractor before being transferred to the deceased to complete.
“After noticing the cracks, they wanted to construct some new pillars to support the structure, but unfortunately the building started falling off and eventually collapsed on him.”
Prince Kwame Adutwum, the assembly member of the area, has confirmed that the body has been retrieved and deposited at the morgue.
