Japan midfielder Tanaka Ao has issued an apology following the incident that left Ghana’s Francis Abu with a serious injury during Friday’s Kirin Challenge Cup match in Nagoya.
Speaking to the press after the game, Tanaka expressed regret over the challenge that resulted in the Black Stars midfielder being stretchered off in the second half. "I’m sorry about today," he said, acknowledging the severity of the moment and the impact it had on the match.
The injury prompted immediate concern from both teams, with Abu later transported to the Toyota Memorial Hospital for further evaluation. His condition was described as stable by the Ghana Football Association, which confirmed that medical teams from Ghana, Toulouse FC and the hospital have agreed on a management plan.
Tanaka’s apology follows praise from Ghana coach Otto Addo, who commended the midfielder for approaching both Abu and the Ghana bench after the incident, describing the gesture as a mark of respect and good sportsmanship.
The match ended 2-0 in favour of Japan, but the injury overshadowed proceedings as Ghana awaits the next steps in Abu’s treatment and recovery.
