Commercial drivers operating along the Adidome–Juapong road in the Central and North Tongu districts have threatened a strike to protest against the alarming rise of unauthorized speed ramps, posing risks to motorists and passengers.
The threat was averted following the intervention of Mr. Guggisberg Fiagbenu, Assembly Member of the Adidome Central Electoral Area and Chairman of the Adidome–Juapong Transport Union.
In a statement addressed to the relevant authorities, Mr. Fiagbenu expressed concern over the proliferation of unapproved ramps on the stretch, which posed a danger to public safety and the smooth movement of vehicles.
He explained that drivers had initially resolved to embark on a strike on Wednesday to demand immediate removal of the illegal ramps.
However, after his engagement with the drivers, they agreed to suspend the planned action based on assurances that he would draw the attention of the appropriate authorities to address the matter.
“These unauthorized ramps are causing serious inconvenience and could lead to accidents. We are calling on the Ghana Highway Authority and other relevant agencies to urgently clear them off,” he appealed.
Mr. Fiagbenu further urged individuals and communities to desist from constructing speed ramps without official approval, stressing that such actions compromise road safety and reduce transport efficiency.
Some drivers who spoke with the Ghana News Agency commended Mr. Fiagbenu for his swift mediation but reiterated that they would not hesitate to withdraw their services if no action is taken in the coming days.
“We spend a lot on vehicle maintenance because of these ramps. It’s becoming unbearable. Those who patronise our services also decry some health challenges after alighting at their destinations. We need the roads fixed and those unauthorized speed ramps removed immediately,” some drivers revealed.
The Assembly Member called on the Volta Regional Minister, Chief Executive Officers of Central and North Tongu respectively, the Ghana Highway Authority to act swiftly to prevent further agitations and ensure safer travel along the Adidome–Juapong road.
