Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has praised his players after Kenya stunned tournament favourites DR Congo with a 1â0 victory in their opening Group A match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Speaking after the match at a packed Kasarani Stadium, McCarthy said his team showed heart and discipline, especially considering that many were making their CHAN debuts.
“I’m proud of my team; many of them were stepping onto such a big stage for the first time. Beating one of the tournament favourites is massive for us,” he said.
Kenya overcame a nervy start to take control of the game, with McCarthy pointing to their composure and determination as key factors.
“We were nervous at the start, but once the boys settled, they showed real bravery,” he added.
Midfielder Austine Odhiambo scored the game’s only goal just before halftime, sending the home fans into celebration. The win gives Kenya an ideal start to their first CHAN campaign and sets them up well ahead of their next match against Angola.
McCarthy, a former Bafana Bafana striker, remains cautious but hopeful.
“We’ve made a good start, but we have to stay grounded. There are tough games ahead. But if the boys keep playing like this, we can go far.”
