The Government of Ghana has condemned the military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing the action as an unconstitutional usurpation of authority and a direct assault on democratic governance.
The Government said the coup, carried out by elements of the military, had dangerously disrupted the electoral process that followed the peaceful conduct of presidential and legislative elections on 23rd November 2025.
This was in a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra on Wednesday.
On 26 November 2025, the military in Guinea-Bissau declared that it had seized full control of the country.
The coup came just days after citizens voted in presidential and legislative elections and before official results were released.
In a televised announcement, the new military authorities, operating under the banner of the High Military Command for the Restoration of National Security and Public Order, suspended all institutions of the state, halted the electoral process, shut down media operations, and closed the country’s borders.
Ghana expressed its “profound concern and deep dissatisfaction” at what it described as a brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau.
It said the military action had obstructed the anticipated announcement of the election results scheduled for 27th November 2025 and interrupted the country’s democratic trajectory.
The Government of Ghana called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau and urged all actors involved to respect the democratic process.
It stressed that any grievances arising from the elections must be addressed through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms rather than through force or unconstitutional intervention.
The Government of Ghana also demanded the safeguarding of the security and fundamental rights of all citizens and foreign nationals in Guinea-Bissau.
The statement placed particular emphasis on the protection of officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently deployed in the country, insisting that their safety and secure passage must be guaranteed without delay.
Additionally, the Ghanaian government appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm, exercise maximum restraint, and avoid actions that may escalate tensions.
The statement reaffirmed Ghana’s full support for ECOWAS and the African Union in coordinating a response to the situation in accordance with regional and continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
The statement called for swift and collective action to resolve the crisis and restore democratic legitimacy.
