Asante Kotoko’s unbeaten start to this season’s Ghana Premier League came to an abrupt end on Wednesday after a 2-1 defeat to Basake Holy Stars in an outstanding fixture at the AAKII Arena.
Kotoko entered the match as the league’s only unbeaten side and had the chance to move level on points with leaders Aduana FC. Holy Stars, however, delivered a spirited performance to halt the Porcupine Warriors’ run.
Both teams created tidy openings in a balanced first half but failed to convert their chances. Four minutes after the restart, Holy Stars went ahead through Richmond Somiah, who finished confidently to ignite the home crowd.
Kotoko responded almost immediately. Kwame Poku struck in the 53rd minute to restore parity and give the visitors renewed momentum in their push for a comeback win.
Despite sustained pressure from Kotoko, Holy Stars held firm and delivered a late blow. Prince Tweneboah scored two minutes into added time to secure a dramatic victory and all three points for the hosts.
The win lifts Holy Stars to nine points, boosting their hopes of escaping the relegation zone. Kotoko remain fourth, three points behind the top spot, missing a valuable chance to close the gap.
