Mr. Ebenezer Desmond Yaw Dzordzordzi, Head of the Physical Education, Health and Sports Department of Manya Krobo Senior High School, Somanya, Friday stated that lack of physical activity could lead to the risk of developing some chronic diseases.
“A sedentary lifestyle is associated with increased risk of developing chronic diseases,” he said.
Mr. Dzordzordzi said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a three-day National Conference of Catechists and Evangelists Union of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG) at Anlo Afiadenyigba in the Keta Municipality.
The conference which was attended by over 200 catechists and evangelists from the 16 presbyteries of the church was on the theme “Care for Creation: The Task and Mission of the Catechist.”
Mr. Dzordzordzi mentioned cardiovascular diseases like heart diseases and stroke, type two diabetics, colon and breast cancers, obesity, depression and anxiety as some of the diseases resulting from sedentary lifestyle.
“Our physical well-being depends on physical activity,” he said.
Mr. Dzordzordzi noted that the benefits of physical activity were enormous as it helped in the control of weight, improved mood and energy.
He said it also kept one’s thinking, learning and judgement skills sharp as one aged.
Mr. Dzordzordzi therefore advised Ghanaians to be more involved in physical activity especially as they age.
He also advised them to refrain from using agro-chemicals as it did not only destroy the ecosystem but also harmful to human beings.
“These chemicals contaminate our foods and waters we depend on,” he said.
Mr. Dzordzordzi asked farmers to revert to the use of hoes and cutlasses or tractors to plough the land and use organic manure for their crops.
