We’re poised to embark on drain construction this year – Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly

The Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LeKMA) will focus on the construction of drains this year as part of infrastructural development, according to Mr. Mordecai Quarshie, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

Mr. Quarshie mentioned that a 10-kilometer drain had been awarded for construction, with funding from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).

He added that the Assembly would also use its internally generated funds to construct additional drains, complementing the DAC fund project.

During an interview, the MCE emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to constructing the drainage system to facilitate the development of roads within the Municipality.

He explained, “The advantage is that once the drains are completed, it becomes easier to construct the roads. So, our strategy is to continue constructing the drains before focusing on the roads. Without that, most of the roads and pavements will be damaged.”

Meanwhile, ongoing work on inner roads within the Municipality includes areas such as King Kotey Street, Coffee Street, from the Teshie Mobil traffic light through to Tsui Bleoo last stop, from Oak Street to the Assembly, and to Palm Tree Avenue.

The MCE acknowledged that although work was progressing, it was not as fast as expected. He appealed to residents to exercise patience, emphasizing that the focus was on revenue, and with good revenue, the work would proceed steadily.

He commented, “Yes, we need to address our internal roads; the damage was caused by the construction of the La Beach road. Many sections were blocked, and heavy-duty trucks, including 40-fitter containers, used the internal roads that were not originally designed to bear that kind of weight and pressure. The government is not oblivious to that.”

On education, the MCE announced that the Assembly would install solar lights in some schools to enhance teaching and learning.

“Two years ago, testing revealed an unusually high prevalence of eye problems among pupils and students, which we believe was due to the blackboard and the darkness in the classroom during the day. Most schools do not have electricity because they cannot afford to pay, so we are piloting the installation of solar panels. This initiative will be implemented in the northern and southern cluster of schools in the municipality,” he explained.

Regarding health, he disclosed that a National Claims Processing Centre for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), with support from the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Authority, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, was under construction. The Centre would house NHIS Municipal offices for Ledzokuku and Krowor.

He further stated that they would also construct a new Municipal Health Directorate with conference rooms and offices. Additionally, a new Ambulance Bay and a Fire Service Bay would be constructed.

Mr. Quarshie urged residents to remain calm as the Assembly and the government worked towards the development of Ledzokuku.
