Ilyas Ansah gave Union Berlin fans a reason to cheer on Saturday, but his goal was not enough to stop Hoffenheim from taking all three points in a lively Bundesliga clash at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
The German-Ghanaian striker started brightly and showed great energy throughout his 74 minutes on the pitch. After a frustrating first half where Andrej Kramaric’s penalty and Fisnik Asllani’s header put Hoffenheim 2-0 ahead, Ansah struck back just four minutes after the restart. His close-range finish in the 49th minute sparked hope among home supporters.
However, Hoffenheim responded quickly through Asllani again in the 51st minute, restoring their two-goal cushion. Tom Rothe pulled another back with a fine effort in the 71st minute, but his dismissal eleven minutes later proved costly. From there, Hoffenheim sealed the win as Tim Lemperle converted a late penalty to make it 4-2.
Ansah’s goal and determination were positives for Union despite the defeat. The club will now regroup ahead of their trip to face Eintracht Frankfurt on September 21.
