The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has inaugurated a high-level committee to coordinate Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following the Black Stars’ successful qualification for the tournament.
The committee’s mandate extends beyond football, aiming to leverage the World Cup for cultural, economic, and diplomatic gains. According to its Terms of Reference, the body will manage “all necessary financial, administrative, operational, logistical and regulatory arrangements required for the preparation, participation and desired performance of the Black Stars,” while also promoting Ghana’s image through cultural, trade, tourism, and bilateral initiatives.
Key objectives include ensuring comprehensive national participation, improving the team’s performance, showcasing tourism and economic opportunities, strengthening international relations, and directing sports investment to the country.
The committee’s responsibilities cover fundraising and sponsorships, team preparation, training camps, international friendlies, media campaigns, trade missions, and cultural promotions. It will work closely with state and non-state partners to mobilise resources and support.
Chaired by Sports Minister Hon. Kofi Adams, the committee includes senior representatives from key ministries, the GFA, and the private sector, with the ability to co-opt experts and form subcommittees.
The committee will operate until three months after the World Cup, delivering a comprehensive World Cup roadmap, activity reports, and a final report to Cabinet, ensuring Ghana maximises both sporting and off-field benefits from the tournament.
