Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has revealed the nation’s intention to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, seizing the opportunity following the withdrawal of initial host candidates.
With the successful hosting of the 2023 African Games under its belt, Ghana is poised to extend its hospitality to other member states of the Commonwealth.
Ussif expressed confidence in Ghana’s capability to host the prestigious event, citing recent discussions with the President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) during his visit to the country.
Impressed by Ghana’s facilities showcased during the African Games, the CGF President endorsed the idea of an African nation hosting the Commonwealth Games.
“We have the existing facilities to host the Commonwealth Games, plus it won’t cost us much to host the games as compared to how much it cost us to host the African games if we decide to,” Ussif told GHOne TV emphasizing the financial viability of Ghana’s bid.
He also highlighted the financial support provided by the Commonwealth Games secretariat to host nations, contrasting it with the self-funded nature of the African Games.

“The Commonwealth Games secretariat even gives the host nation money unlike the African Games where the host solely funds every expenditure for the games, so Ghana can host it if we decide to do it,” Mustapha Ussif added.
With Singapore and Malaysia ruling out bids and Australian state of Victoria withdrawing as the original host due to escalating costs, the CGF is actively exploring alternative options.
Although specific countries involved in the bidding process remain confidential, the CGF expressed optimism and indicated progress towards announcing a host nation in May.
Ghana’s successful hosting of the African Games in March 2024 has bolstered its credentials as a capable host for major international sporting events. Despite initial challenges, the event garnered positive feedback, showcasing Ghana’s potential as a host nation.
