Former Youth and Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has confidently declared Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, dismissing any fears of a late twist in Group I.
The Black Stars’ emphatic 5-0 win over the Central African Republic in Morocco on Thursday put them on the verge of securing a spot at next year’s global showpiece.
With one round of matches remaining, Ghana need only a draw against Comoros in Accra on Sunday to confirm their place.
Even in defeat, the four-time African champions are expected to progress, barring an unlikely scenario in which Madagascar thrash Mali by eight clear goals.
“We’ve qualified - I know we’ve qualified,” Vanderpuye said confidently. “Even if we lose, unless Madagascar wins by more than eight goals, we still qualify. And in the modern game, I don’t expect them to win by eight goals.”
He, however, urged the team to finish strongly, citing Ghana’s painful recent defeats to Comoros.
“To put the icing on the cake, I think even if we come out with a draw, it’s fine. Still, we have to beat Comoros⦠we should just prove to them that we are Ghana.”
Ghana top Group I with 22 points, while Madagascar trail by three and face Mali away in their final qualifier.
