Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has urged the Black Stars to go all out against Comoros in Sunday’s decisive 2026 World Cup qualifier in Accra, insisting Ghana must avenge past defeats suffered at the hands of the island nation.
Vanderpuye, while expressing confidence that the Black Stars have already sealed qualification, said the team must use the Comoros game to restore pride and erase the painful memories of previous encounters.
"[Qualification] will happen. But to put the icing on the cake, I think even if we come out with a draw, it’s fine. Still, we have to beat Comoros â because of that painful defeat we suffered at their hands during the qualifying series and at the Cup of Nations.
"We never expected them to beat us at the last Cup of Nations, but they did. I think we should just prove to them that we are Ghana.”
Ghana’s recent record against Comoros has been disappointing. The four-time African champions suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to the islanders at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which saw them exit the tournament at the group stage for the first time since 2006.
The humiliation continued when Comoros stunned Ghana 1-0 in the reverse fixture of the World Cup qualifiers in Moroni, a setback that sparked nationwide criticism of the team’s performance.
Sunday’s clash at the Accra Sports Stadium offers the Black Stars a chance to make amends and seal qualification in emphatic fashion.
