Ghanaian forward Inaki Williams opened his scoring account for the season as Athletic Club secured a much-needed 2-1 victory over RCD Mallorca in LaLiga on Saturday.
The 31-year-old ended his nine-game goal drought across all competitions, converting calmly from the penalty spot to give Athletic an early lead at the San Mames.
The goal was his first of the 2025/26 campaign, arriving at a crucial moment both for his club and personally, as he looks to rediscover his best form ahead of Ghana’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Williams was a constant threat to Mallorca’s backline with his pace and movement before being substituted early in the second half due to a thigh concern. Despite his exit, Athletic went on to claim their first win in seven matches, moving into the top five of the LaLiga standings.
For Williams, the goal could serve as a confidence boost ahead of the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against the Central African Republic and Comoros next week.
With Ghana leading Group I and eyeing a fifth World Cup appearance, Otto Addo will be counting on the experienced forward’s sharpness and composure in front of goal to help seal qualification.
