Ernest Poku came off the bench to fire Bayer Leverkusen to a 2-1 victory over St. Pauli in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The Dutch-Ghanaian winger entered the game in the 56th minute and needed just two minutes to make an impact. With the score level at 1-1, he latched onto a clever pass from Alejandro Grimaldo before drilling a low right-footed shot into the bottom corner, sparking jubilant celebrations from the away supporters at the Millerntor-Stadion.
Leverkusen had earlier taken the lead through Edmond Tapsoba in the 25th minute, but Hauke Wahl equalised for the hosts before half-time. St. Pauli pressed with energy but failed to create enough clear-cut chances against a disciplined Leverkusen side.
Poku’s lively cameo added fresh energy to Leverkusen’s attack, earning praise from both his coach and the fans. The win extends Leverkusen’s momentum heading into their Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven on October 1.
