Black Princesses winger Ivy Osei Owusu says mental strength played a crucial role in Ghana’s 2-0 away victory over Tunisia in the first leg of the second qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Speaking to Sporty FM in Accra ahead of Sunday’s return fixture, Owusu revealed that nerves were high before their first international outing, but resilience saw them through.
“I think when we were going, we were a bit scared because for many of us it was our first time, but mental toughness helped us get the win. We were really happy getting the win in our first international match,” she said.
Despite their advantage, Owusu stressed the need for focus and improvement ahead of the decisive second leg at the Accra Sports Stadium.
“We have been training, preparing well. We won away, but that doesn’t mean we have to relax. There is more room for improvement, so we are preparing to qualify for the World Cup. We got just two goals, and we must improve more.”
Ghana is seeking to seal qualification for its eighth consecutive U-20 Women’s World Cup appearance, with the 2026 edition set to take place in Poland.
