Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police, has promoted 12 police personnel for their various roles in busting 10 suspects behind rural bank robberies in the country.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, the IGP said the Police Management Board had promoted three Chief Inspectors to the Police Academy and three Inspectors have also been promoted to the rank of Chief Inspectors.
According to Mr Yohuno, two sergeants have been promoted to the rank of Inspectors, a Corporal has also been promoted to the rank of a Sergeant and three Constables have also been promoted to Lance Corporal.
In relation to the senior officers promotions, the IGP said the Police Council would take a decision on them.
Mr Yohonu said the police had recovered 14 weapons, including AK47 rifles, Pump Action, a single barrel gun, pistols, ammunition, vehicles, and mobile phones, among others.
Mr Yohuno said three of the suspects were, however, shot dead during a shoot out with the police.
He told journalists that the Police administration have launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects who are on the run.
“We will not stop until we get them arrested. Let us all be vigilant members of the community, and report any suspicious persons or activities to the Police…. The service is committed to rewarding credible information shared to support our investigations” he added.
The IGP said the Police administration was elated that it had made “a major breakthrough in the fight against violent crimes specially armed robbery.”
The IGP attributed the police administration’s success to painstanking investigations, working with credible informants, analysing available data, and surveillance across several regions.
“This operation took us to Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern and Ashanti regions,” the IGP said.
He commended the Ashanti Regional Police Commander and his Intelligence Team for the hard work which led to the uncovering of the 15-member syndicate behind the rural bank robberies.
The 10 suspects include Akwesi Agyei aka Cobra, Ibrahim Alhassan, Samuel Appiah aka Akwasi Mugu, Francis Acquah aka Preman, David Obuobi, aka Wasty and Martin Akansina aka One Billion.
The rest are Nana Yaw Frimpong aka Mystical, Kojo Atingwo aka Borga, Samuel Akwasi Gyan and Stephen Sey.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned while efforts are underway to arrest accomplices who are at large.
