Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schaefer has paid visits to Hearts of Oak and newly promoted Hohoe United ahead of the start of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.
The German tactician, who guided Cameroon to the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations title, interacted with coaches and players of the two clubs, aiming to inspire them ahead of the new campaign.
Schaefer, appointed as Technical Advisor of the Black Stars in January, is tasked with providing technical guidance, supporting football development in Ghana, and working with the GFA’s Technical Directorate on long-term strategic planning.
Speaking to ghanafa.org, Schaefer praised the contribution of local players to the national team. “We have many top players playing in Europe, but our goalkeeper is a local and was fantastic on Monday. I want to visit the clubs and use him as a role model. All players have a chance to play for the Black Stars team,” he said.
He added, “It’s great motivation for everyone. I’ll be watching the games too. Most African players who play in Europe come from Ghana, and we must be the heart of African football again.”
The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League kicks off today, Friday, with Hearts of Oak hosting Hohoe United at the Accra Sports Stadium at 7 pm local time in the season opener.
