The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, says the Democracy Cup has demonstrated the true spirit of Ghana’s democratic values following the successful staging of its second edition at the University of Ghana Stadium last Friday.
Hearts of Oak clinched the 2025 Democracy Cup by beating city rivals Great Olympics 1-0 in a tense final.
Substitute Kwesi Asmah netted the decisive goal in the 70th minute, sealing victory for the Phobians after they had fallen short in last year’s inaugural edition against Asante Kotoko.
Speaking after the game, Mr. Djietror hailed the tournament for achieving its purpose.
“We have achieved our target. The atmosphere has been very exciting, characterised by joy. You can see the unity of purpose with which we all came here to cheer them up,” he said.
He stressed that the healthy competition on display reflected the essence of democratic practice.
“The competition has been very healthy, and this is what we need in our democracy. At the end of the day, one team wins⦠That is the end of the story. Life goes on. And that is how a democracy is supposed to be.”
Before the main match, Parliament’s football team edged their Judiciary counterparts 3-2 on penalties in a curtain-raiser after the game had ended 1-1, adding to the day’s celebration of unity and sportsmanship.
