Spate of road crashes, unacceptable- Street Sense Organisation

Accra, April 16, GNA - Mr Yao Doe-Tamakloe, Director of Operation, Street Sense Organisation, on Tuesday said the recent spate of road carnages cannot be acceptable and appealed to the Road Safety Commission to find stringent measures to address it.

He said the laws must be enforced fearlessly to ensure discipline on the roads.

Mr Doe-Tamakloe said this when the Organisation paid a courtesy call on Mrs Mary Obiri Yeboah, the Executive Director of National Road Safety Commission in Accra.

As part of the visit, Street Sense Organisation donated items worth GHC36,000.00 to the Commission to support its activities.

The items included 60 pieces of branded T' Shirts; 20 pieces of Lacoste; 20 pieces of special Rain Coats; 20 pieces of Reflective Vest; 400 pieces of Seat belt stickers; 400 pieces of helmet stickers, and quantities of diesel and petrol stickers.

Mr Doe-Tamakloe said the Organisation supports the activities of the Commission during festivals and urged it to continue to take advantage of any opportunity, especially where crowds re-gathered to do effective road education.

"Continue hammering on the message till it sinks gradually," he said and appealed to the Commission to look at rules and regulation governing Drivers' Unions and Associations to bring sanity to the roads," he added.

Mrs Yeboah on her part, thanked the Organisation for the gesture.

She announced that National Road Safety Authority Bill was currently in Parliament and if passed, would give them power to hold stakeholders to comply with their own standards and schedules.

She said in the Bill, activities on road safety would be regularised so that people would not just get up and become road safety experts.

"All these organisations will be guided so that they will all be speaking the voice at a go to ensure sanity," she added.

On Transport Operators, Mr Yeboah said, the industry also has to be regulated to ensure discipline in the system.

She said reducing road accidents was a shared responsibility and called on all partners to come on board to achieve the goals.

The Executive Director, therefore, called the public change their attitude and behaviour by respecting the laws of the land.
