Accra, 26 March, GNA - The Ministry of Health Basic School has beaten their competitors to be adjudged the overall winner of the 2018 Francophonie spelling ‘B' competition held in Accra.
For their prize, the School was awarded French text and note books and ICT gadgets, to enhance and broaden their knowledge in the study of French.
The University Primary Basic School emerged First Runner-up and De Youngsters followed up with the third position. They were all presented with French text and note books and ICT gadgets.
The competing schools were Ringway Model Basic School, Bishop Girl’s Basic School, St. Peters School, University Primary School, De Youngster’s School and Ministry of Health Basic School.
The event, which was under the initiative of the Ministry of Education (MOE), French unit was to promote the speaking of French and its culture across the African countries and the world at large.
Mr Louis Mwingwuole, Head of the French Unit (MOE), said they believe that every single child should have a basic knowledge of French and therefore they were hoping to deepen the friendship between Ghana and neighbouring French countries.
He said understanding the French dialect could offer an individual many opportunities across the continent especially in the job market.
Mr Mwingwuole encouraged all, especially students to take the study of French language seriously as the language French was seen as the second international language in the world.
He indicated that French, if studied and learnt well, gave an international touch and advantage especially in communicating with people, adding that the country in particular had its neighbouring countries to be the Francophone and there was the need to take the language serious.
He said the 2018 Francophonie day celebrations was witnessed across the world on 20th March of every year and therefore they saw it to be a great opportunity to connect with other countries with the intention of selling the French culture to the world.
Mr Mwingwuole said the quiz in future would extend to more participating schools in order to promote the effective learning of French.
He expressed the hope that the competition would gradually involve the junior high schools, senior high schools and even to the tertiary level, adding that the competition should be able to cut across the country so that every child could have a basic knowledge of French in school.
He lauded organizers of the event for their vision and courage, and urged them to sustain the programme which sought to promote integrity and the respect of French culture.
