AGI, World Bank roll out Energy Smart Businesses initiative

The Association of Ghana Industries–Energy Service Centre (AGI-ESC), in partnership with the World Bank, has launched the Energy Smart Businesses pilot initiative to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cut energy use, reduce costs and enhance sustainability.

The six-month pilot will support 35 SMEs in agribusiness, garments and textiles, and hospitality with free on-site energy audits, tailored efficiency recommendations, staff training and access to a national energy efficiency peer-learning network.

“SMEs are vital to Ghana’s economy but face high energy costs that limit their growth. This pilot project provides the tools and expertise to help businesses operate more efficiently and competitively, while also enabling them to serve as pioneers and role models for other SMEs,” said Baerbel Freyer, Chief Technical Officer of AGI-ESC.

The programme, fully funded by the World Bank, is expected to provide proof of concept for scaling up energy efficiency interventions nationwide while strengthening local capacity in sustainable energy management.

Applications are open until 30 September 2025 at www.agiesc.com, with priority given to businesses with significant energy consumption and strong potential for impact.
