Businessman and entrepreneur, Michael Tetteh Kwetey, has been elected President of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF), following a competitive election at the association’s 8th National Delegates Congress, held in Kumasi.
Mr. Kwetey secured 70 votes to defeat his sole contender, Dr. Peter Kwesi Terkper, who polled 66 votes. He will serve a four-year term as head of GNAFF, a national organisation representing the interests of farmers and fisherfolk across the country.
The two-day congress, held under the theme “Uniting Farmers and Fishermen to Feed the Nation”, brought together delegates from all regions to elect new national executives and discuss strategies to improve food production and farmer welfare.
In his post-election address, Mr. Kwetey described the outcome as a reaffirmation of the association’s relevance and collective resilience.
He pledged to lead a proactive administration focused on improving the welfare of members and strengthening the association’s engagement with national policymakers.
“Our renewed strength is a testament to our strategic importance to Ghana’s economy,” he told delegates. “We are committed to working with government and stakeholders to improve productivity, enhance livelihoods, and secure a future where no society can imagine itself without the contribution of farmers and fisherfolk.”
However, he cautioned that while the association is ready to collaborate with the government, it would not shy away from offering constructive criticism of policies that fail to serve the interests of its members.
Other key outcomes from the congress included the election of Rev. Simon Banmarigu as National Youth Organiser with 106 votes, beating Temple Solomon Adjei, who secured 30 votes. Dr. Abutu Kapori was elected General Secretary, defeating Dawuda Nashirata in the contest.
Several officers were elected unopposed, including Dr. Israel Kuadzi (Deputy General Secretary), Isaac Amanor (National Treasurer), Paul Agorsu Danklu (National Financial Secretary), Emmanuel Anunyam (National Organiser), and Shaibu Mohammed (Deputy National Organiser).
Esther Asi Tettey Akplehey was named National Women’s Organiser, with Felicia Ayamga as her deputy. Rev. Richard Amoh was elected Deputy National Youth Organiser.
In a speech delivered on her behalf, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mrs. Emelia Arthur, praised the resilience and dedication of Ghana’s farmers and fisherfolk, describing them as “unsung heroes feeding the nation and sustaining livelihoods.”
She noted that her ministry remains committed to policies and programmes that promote sustainable fishing and aquaculture practices.
“Your resilience and hard work, often in the face of adversity, deserve our highest commendation,” she said. “Collaboration with your association is key to building a vibrant agricultural and fisheries sector.”
Mr. Kwetey, who owns several agribusiness ventures, said the new leadership would embark on a nationwide tour to engage directly with farmers and fisherfolk to understand their needs and working conditions better.
The GNAFF election comes at a time when stakeholders are calling for increased investment in the sector to address climate change, rising input costs, and access to markets. The association’s leadership is expected to play a key role in shaping national discourse around food security and rural livelihoods.
