Communications Minister Launches E-Learning Extra Class Project for SHS Students

The Minister of Communications and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu Ekuful has launched an e-learning extra class programme for senior high students in her constituency.

The "Wolo" app is expected to improve learning abilities of students through technological features to advance academic performance in the area.

Launching the application at the Ebenezer Senior High School in Accra on Tuesday, the minister noted that the significance of technology in transforming the entire educational sector could not be over-emphasised hinting that the initiative would soon be adopted by all schools across the country.

"The launch of this app combines my two passions--technology and education and I always say that education is the key to personal transformation because one of my favourite anecdote is that if I had not been to school, I would be selling charcoal but by being educated, today, I am a lawyer, a member of parliament and a minister of state. It is education and hard work that made it possible. If that could be possible in my life, it can be possible in yours. The important thing is to make the most of the opportunities that are available to you and one of such is this Wolo, e-learning application," she said.

The minister urged developers of the app to liaise with other government agencies working in the education sector to explore opportunities of harnessing the platform to reach out to more students particularly those in deprived areas.

"There are opportunities available for you to extend the reach of your programmes. One of such initiatives is being organised by the Ghana Investment Fund and Electronic Communication (GIFEC) which provided these devices for you to utilise. They also have an educational component to it. They don't just provide devices. They also provide coding and other things and I believe it's an excellent initiative for you to collaborate to provide content to all schools in the country," she said.

Mrs Ekuful entreated students to make utmost use of the platform to develop their academic capacity saying, "It is imperative that our students be encouraged to utilise these tools at their disposals to make responsible use of their time."

"It will be in our interest to encourage our children to also come and learn to be responsible adults in the near future," she stated.

The minister also cut the sod for the commencement of work on the Shiabu police station.
