SAS Finance Group has reached out to the Ghana Football Association to notify the 21 players of the Black Satellites’ 2009 U-20 World Cup-winning team about the availability of their investment cheques.
This follows the maturity of a 15-year investment made on their behalf by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which reached its due date on January 4, 2025.
The communication was directed to the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association and also copied to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. A total sum of GHc210,000 was invested, with each player receiving GHc10,000 in 2009.
SAS confirmed that the players can now collect their cheques from the SAS office in Accra, beginning January 8, 2025. To collect the funds, players are required to present a valid Ghana Card for identification. If they cannot personally pick up the cheque, a third party may collect it on their behalf, provided they present a notarized Power of Attorney.
The SAS office is located on the 14th floor of the World Trade Centre on Independence Avenue in Accra. Along with the investment, each player received annual insurance coverage, which helped with life and health-related expenses during the 15 years.
The Black Satellites’ victory in the 2009 U-20 World Cup remains a historic milestone for Ghana, marking the country’s first and only U-20 World Cup title to date. They beat Brazil on penalties in the final after 0-0 draw after extra time with 10 men.
