The Member of Parliament (MP) for Yapei-Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, has issued a grave warning about an impending energy crisis in the country. Jinapor cites a lack of fuel reserves for power generation.
According to Jinapor, the outgoing Nana Akufo-Addo administration failed to secure the necessary fuel supplies despite numerous warnings and calls to do so.
The MP made these statements in an interview with JoyNews following the swearing-in ceremony of President John Mahama in Accra on January 7, 2025.
I have bad news for you. As of today, the confirmation we are receiving is that we have only five hours' worth of fuel left.
He further revealed that the current fuel stock for power generation would last no more than two days.
If you look at the heavy fuel oil and diesel fuel, we don't have enough to last two days. So, in two days' time, we are likely to run out of fuel.
The Former Deputy Energy Minister also pointed out that the current government has not made any new fuel orders.
This administration [outgoing NPP government] has not placed any fuel orders as we speak.
The country’s growing energy needs require a steady and reliable fuel supply to ensure consistent power generation and avoid disruptions.
Ghana suffered severe power outages during Mahama’s first term in office, but his government resolved the energy crisis before being voted out in 2016.
Dumsor, as the power crisis is known locally, was one of the major reasons the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) government was voted out of power.
The country experienced a relatively stable electricity supply in the years that followed, but the latter years especially months leading to the 2024 General Elections saw significant power outages in some parts of Ghana.
