Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has confessed that he was caught off guard when he realised he had conceded a shot from Arsenal’s Thomas Partey, “one of the Premier League’s top midfielders”.
Partey’s strike sealed a 2-0 victory for the Gunners, maintaining their perfect start to the season.
In a tightly contested week two clash at Villa Park, Leandro Trossard, who came on as a substitute, made an immediate impact by scoring with his first touch, putting Arsenal ahead.
Ten minutes later, Partey added a second, capitalising on a costly error from Martinez. The Argentine shot-stopper admitted that he didn’t initially realise the shot had come from Partey until it was too late.
“I tried my best to save it. I didn’t know it was a shot from Partey until I raised my head after the ball went in. He’s one of the best midfielders in the league,” Martinez said in a post-match interview.

The goal marked Partey’s first Premier League strike since March 2023, and he played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s victory, especially sweet after Villa’s double over Arsenal last season.
Despite rumours linking Partey with a move away from Arsenal during the summer, the Ghanaian midfielder has proven his worth in the opening games, solidifying his place as a key member of Mikel Arteta’s squad.
With Arsenal aiming for their first Premier League title in 20 years, Partey’s contributions will be crucial as the season progresses.
