The Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar, has said that an outright ban on small-scale mining cannot be considered a viable solution, as the sector provides significant employment opportunities and contribute to foreign exchange earnings.
She addressed the media on the sidelines of an event in the Eastern Region, discussing the government’s actions in response to increasing calls for a ban on mining activities due to the deteriorating conditions of river bodies and the environment.
“Galamsey started a long time ago, any time it becomes rampant we tackle it head-on so that water bodies aren’t destroyed. I doubt if the call for ban is towards a ban on small -cale mining. Hundreds of citizens are employed in the small-scale mining, they contribute to foreign exchange earnings and the economy,” she justified.
“If someone in the community reported someone engaged in community mining and have employed several youth working there, does it mean we should ban it? Government is taking action to ensure that we protect our river bodies, we will engage every stakeholder to give appropriate directions in the sector, ” she added.
Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo has set up a five-member adhoc committee to engage stakeholders over the irresponsible mining menace.
