President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is scheduled to address the nation tonight, Sunday, August 30, 2020, in what will be his 16th update on the government’s fight against Covid-19.
Dominating the presentation will be plans to reopen the country’s international airport to passengers.
Ghana’s air, land and sea borders were shut on Sunday, March 22 in the heat of the fight against the virus.
It was by Executive Instrument (EI), which was extended multiple times.
In his last update on Sunday, August 16, President Akufo-Addo hinted that the air borders are likely to be open on Tuesday, September 1.
“I know many still ask when our borders, especially our international airport, Kotoka International Airport, will be open,” he admitted.
“Under my instructions, the Ministry of Aviation, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Ghana Airports Co. Ltd., have been working, with the Ministry of Health and its agencies, to ascertain our readiness to reopen our airport.
“I want to ensure that we are in a position to test every single passenger that arrives in the country to avoid the spread of the virus. The outcome of that exercise will show us the way, and determine when we can reopen our border by air. I am hoping that, by God’s grace, we will be ready to do so by 1st September.”
A simulation exercise was conducted on Friday, August 28 and the greenlight is said to have been given for the reopening of the Kotoka International Airport.
Already, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has outlined guidelines for the reopening on Tuesday.
President Akufo-Addo is also expected to touch on the completion of the West African Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which ends on Friday, September 4.
