A former member of the erstwhile AFRC, Major Boakye Gyan (retd) who was picked up by officials of the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday has been granted bail.
He was picked up in the morning at about 8am when he was preparing to go to his farm, and was sent to Drobo Divisional Police Station for questioning.
Boakye Gyan sometime last week said if the Electoral Commission (EC) goes ahead to compile a new voter’s register for the 2020 elections, it could plunge the country into civil war.
According to information gathered by 3news.com, Major Boakye Gyan was asked whether he still stood by his comment in front of his two lawyers, which he responded in the affirmative.
He is said to have told the police that his comment was influenced by his experience about how civil wars had occurred in some African countries.
According to him, the comment was a warning to the President and the EC because he wanted Ghanaians to continue to enjoy the peace they are currently enjoying.
He stayed at the divisional police headquarters till 4pm when he was granted bail to the tune of GH¢ 20,000 with a surety.
As part of his bail condition, he is to report to the Drobo Divisional Police Headquarters every Monday until further notice.
Functionaries of the ruling New Patriotic Party and other civil society organizations who did not take his comment lightly had demanded for his arrest.
Last week, the former National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for Jaman South declined an invitation by the CID for his comment on health ground.
