“With profound sorrow and deep grief”, the Fosu family last Saturday, July 26, 2025, announced the passing of Ghana’s beloved musical icon, Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, after a short illness.
Bentsifi extends heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, and particularly his children. A legend by every measure, Daddy Lumba’s legacy is a treasure for Ghana.
As well as an outpouring of grief by his fans worldwide, amid visits by many personalities to his home, tributes have been pouring in from all quarters of society including one from His Excellency, the President, John Dramani Mahama and the NDC party, Ex President Nana Akufo-Addo & Vice Bawumia, and the NPP party, among a plethora of other distinguished dignitaries.
Having been based in Germany, where his career kicked off, the German Embassy in Accra also paid tribute, mourning his death and honouring his profound impact on music and culture both in Ghana and abroad.
In a statement issued, the Embassy extended its condolences to Ghanaians and fans worldwide, describing the legendary highlife musician’s legacy as one that will stand the test of time.
“It was during his time in Germany in the late 1980s that he transitioned from gospel music into highlife. There, he met fellow Ghanaian musician Nana Acheampong in 1989, and the two formed the famous Lumba Brothers, a group widely credited with popularising Borga Highlife – a genre that blends Ghanaian musical traditions with Western classics, particularly those emerging from the Ghanaian diaspora in Germany,” the statement said.
Together with MUSIGA, the Creative Arts Council is holding a national candlelight vigil in his honour at the Black Star Square at 6pm, tomorrow Saturday, August 2, 2025.
