Having gone down 2-0 before half-time, Mustapha pulled one back seven minutes after the break to lead a spirited second half display from the hosts.
Red Star Belgrade scored twice in the space of three minutes through Aleksandar Katai and Mirko Ivanic to finish the first stanza with the advantage.
However, Mustapha, who spent almost four years of his career at the capital-based club stung his former employers to hand Vojvodina a huge boost.
Lazar Randelovic levelled for the home side with 13 minutes remaining before Milan Kolarevic snatched a late winner with his 92nd minute strike.
Mustapha returned to Serbia in the summer transfer window after spending last season at Austrian side LASK Linz.
The Tamale-born forward has now scored a goal in six league games this season.
