Sports Minister Kofi Adams supports Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu’s call for equal pay for men and women’s national teams, according to his aide Wonder Mandel Sitsofe.
Mandel said the minister agrees that female athletes deserve fair compensation comparable to their male counterparts.
He cited Adams’ advocacy for higher bonuses for the Black Queens as evidence of his commitment to bridging the gender pay gap in sports.
“Hon. Ofosu Kwakye's call for equal bonuses for men and women athletes is a step in the right direction. The Sports Minister also shares this view," Mandel said, as quoted by Kessben TV.
"For instance, he pushed for increased bonuses for the Black Queens, from $1,500 to $4,500, for winning just one match to qualify from group stage at the WAFCON, and additional bonuses for advancing to the quarterfinals and third place, to promote women's football and bridge the compensation gap.”
Kwakye Ofosu’s comments came after the Black Queens were owed $9,500.
He said all athletes should be treated equally regardless of gender and urged reforms to prevent delays in future payments.
