The Omanhene of the Asokore Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region, Nana Susubiribi Krobea Asante, has urged teachers to encourage and motivate their students to study hard and perform well in their academic and personal endeavours.
Addressing a get-together for teachers in his traditional area at Asokore recently, he asserted that teachers spent a lot of time with students and they should be able to motivate them towards achieving their goals and academic excellence by inculcating in them the "can do spirit".
The programme, which also brought together community and opinion leaders, was held to promote and sustain the healthy relationship between the traditional authorities and the teachers.
Known in private life as Nana Professor S.K.B. Asante, the Omanhene said there were numerous ways that teachers could assist their students to excel, including maintaining a healthy communication between teachers and students, encouraging those with low self-esteem to open up, using varying teaching strategies and materials to cater for the different needs of students, praising and rewarding students who excel and maintaining discipline at all levels.
Hard work
Using himself as an example, Nana Susubiribi Krobea Asante said by dint of hard work, he was able to attend Achimota School in Accra, from Asokore in the Sekyere East District in the Ashanti Region, and also trained as a lawyer, adding that “not even the devil can stop a determined child from succeeding in life”.
The Omanhene, who also holds a Doctor of Juridical Science (JSD) degree from the prestigious Yale Law School, USA, said one's location or family background could not determine one's achievement in life, stressing that, "There is no correlation between one's location and intellect. The fact you were born in the village does not mean you cannot excel.”
Nana Krobea, who is also an international arbitration expert, said it was time for children to dream big and think of venturing into areas that were not common.
The Omanhene has rolled out plans to partner school authorities to improve infrastructural facilities in all the schools in his traditional area.
Already, he said, he had assisted a number of schools, including T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School in Asokore to roof some of the school’s buildings which were recently destroyed in a rainstorm, and also improved road networks in parts of the area.
