The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, on Wednesday inaugurated an 11-member inter-ministerial committee to oversee Ghana’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Chaired by the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, the committee is to provide strategic leadership and ensure effective coordination before, during, and after Ghana’s participation in the global showpiece to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
Other members of the Committee are Stan Xoese Dogbe, Deputy Chief of Staff, Office of the President; Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs; George Opare Addo, Minister, Youth Development; Yusif Jajah, Deputy Minister, Tourism and Culture; and Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Deputy Minister, Finance.
The rest are Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku, President, Ghana Football Association; Elizabeth Yankah, Deputy National Security Coordinator; Abedi Ayew Pele, Former Black Stars Captain; Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Chief Director, Ministry of Sports and Recreation; and a yet-to-be-confirmed member.
Outdooring the committee at the Presidency, Mr. Debrah stated that effective coordination was crucial if Ghana was to make any impact at the Mundial, urging the Committee to execute their mandate with integrity and diligence.
He said at a time the country was on a reset agenda, flaws associated with Ghana’s participation in its four previous appearances must be a thing of the past.
“Let us correct what must be corrected and amplify what can be built. Let us lead with clarity, let us act with urgency, let us project Ghana with discipline and pride,” the Chief of Staff entreated.
He noted that next year’s football festival goes beyond what happens in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, but sets the stage for Ghana’s participation in subsequent World Cups.
“We need to remind ourselves that the World Cup is not just about what happens over 90 minutes. It is about what we do with the four years leading up to it and the four years that follow,” he added.
On behalf of the committee, Mr. Adams said the experiences of the past would be its guide and lay a blueprint for future participations.
He assured that: “We will not only go to partake in just the kicking of the ball. By the time the whole process ends, Ghana will be the biggest of the winners, not just the trophy but also in many other ways including growing our sports and economy.”
