Basake Holy Stars head coach Johnson Smith believes Wednesday’s victory over Asante Kotoko marks the start of a new chapter for the club.
Smith, who recently took over from Evans Adotey, guided the struggling side to a spirited 2-1 win at the AAK II Park, handing Kotoko their first defeat of the season.
Richmond Somiah opened the scoring four minutes after the break, pouncing from close range to give the hosts the lead. Kotoko hit back almost immediately, with striker Kwame Opoku levelling in the 53rd minute.
But deep into stoppage time, Prince Tweneboah settled the contest with a composed finish, curling the ball beyond goalkeeper Mohammed Camara to seal a dramatic win.
“This is just the beginning, so I don’t have to talk much," Smith said after the game.
"This is my first match, so I don’t want to blab too much, but today’s match, I’m happy that we’ve won, so we will continue,” he added.
Basake Holy Stars remain in the relegation zone, but Wednesday’s result offers a glimmer of hope as they prepare to host Nations FC in their Matchday 12 fixture this weekend.
