The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has honored Mohammed Anchala, a farmer from JahinfoYa in Bimbilla, for successfully cultivating cocoa in the Nanumba North Municipality, an unprecedented feat that has drawn admiration across the country’s cocoa industry.

A delegation led by the Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Agronomy and Quality Control, Dr. Francis Baah, visited Anchala’s two-acre cocoa farm, which has been described as groundbreaking for the Northern Region.

The team, which included several COCOBOB Scientists, inspected the thriving plantation and commended the farmer for defying geographical and climatic odds to venture into cocoa cultivation in an area previously considered unsuitable for the crop.
During the visit, Dr. Francis Baah announced that Anchala will receive the Best Innovation Farmer Award at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration scheduled to take place in Ho.

He said Anchala’s achievement marks a new chapter in Ghana’s cocoa sector and demonstrates the potential for expanding cocoa production beyond its traditional growing areas.
To support Anchala’s continued progress, COCOBOD has pledged to deploy extension officers to his farm.

These officers will provide guidance on productivity Enhancement Programmes (PEPs) and Good Agronomic Practices (GAPs) to ensure improved yields and long-term sustainability.
As part of the visit, the delegation presented Anchala with cartons of cocoa products and a cash donation recognition of his dedication and historic contribution to Ghana’s cocoa industry.

Mr. Anchala harvested three bags of cocoa during the 2024/2023 crop season and says he is optimistic about achieving even higher yields in the upcoming 2025/2026 season.
His breakthrough has sparked renewed interest in the possibility of cultivating cocoa in non-traditional regions of the country.
His story, COCOBOD officials noted, serves as an inspiration to farmers across the Northern Region and beyond.
