A 27-year-old unemployed man, Ebenezer Sackitey, who allegedly bit off half of the lower lip of a police officer, has been discharged by the Circuit Court in Accra, after the complainant opted for an out-of-court settlement.
The case was heard on Wednesday before His Honour Kwabena Kodua Obiri Yeboah.
Ebenezer Sackitey had been charged with causing harm, contrary to Section 69 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), but the prosecution formally withdrew the case, following indications from the complainant, Sgt. Francis Nii Quaye Kotey, that the matter could be resolved within the family.
Chief Inspector Belinda Asante, who presented the facts, told the court that the complainant and the accused are related and both serve as Asafotse in Osu.
Family elders, she said, had intervened and advised that the case be handled outside the courtroom.
Incident
The facts as presented indicated that the incident occurred on November 20, 2025 at about 6:30 p.m. on the La Road, near Kingdom Books and Stationery Ltd.
Sgt. Kotey, stationed at the Police National Headquarters was returning from Teshie on his motorbike when a vehicle ahead of him stopped abruptly to allow pedestrians to cross.
In attempting to avoid a collision, he swerved and rode close to a group of elderly women, prompting panic.
Realising this, he parked to apologise to the pedestrians, but they became offended and hurled insults at him.
While the officer was apologising, Ebenezer Sackitey and his brother, who were standing across the road, intervened and accused him of reckless riding.
A heated argument followed. The prosecution said Ebenezer Sackitey threatened to slap the officer and later grabbed his shirt. Though the complainant freed himself, Ebenezer Sackitey’s brother also held his shirt from behind.
The officer managed to pull the brother to the ground, but before he could stand upright and Ebenezer Sackitey allegedly attacked him and bit off half of his lower lip.
The officer bled profusely but managed to restrain Ebenezer Sackitey, while calling for help. A driver who witnessed the confrontation rushed to notify the police at the Osu Police Station, a few metres away.
A patrol team arrived promptly, arrested Ebenezer Sackitey and took both men to the station. Sgt. Kotey was later treated at the Police Hospital and scheduled for further medical procedures.
During investigations, Ebenezer Sackitey admitted the offence in his caution statement.
With the complainant’s decision to pursue an out-of-court settlement, the court discharged the accused and struck out the case.
