Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has revealed the reason behind his decision to make Benjamin Asare Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, insisting that the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper earned his place purely through merit and consistent performances.
Asare was instrumental in Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, keeping multiple clean sheets during the campaign. However, sections of fans have questioned whether he was truly tested in those matches.
Responding to the debate in an interview with Metro TV, Addo was unequivocal that his selections are based solely on merit and form. "Every decision is based on performance," he said. "Benjamin Asare has proven himself to be number one for the team."
The 33-year-old goalkeeper has impressed with his agility, reflexes, and calmness under pressure, attributes that have earned him the full confidence of the technical team. Addo’s public endorsement signals a strong belief in Asare’s ability to command the post at the highest level.
Asare will be confident of being the first-choice goalkeeper at next year's tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
