Former Ghana Football Association Vice President Fred Pappoe has strongly defended goalkeeper Benjamin Asare against mounting criticism, questioning why the shot-stopper is facing scrutiny despite his impressive record in the World Cup qualifiers.
The Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper has become a subject of intense debate among Ghanaian football fans, with critics questioning his credentials despite keeping five clean sheets in as many qualifying matches.
"I don't know why people are making an issue of it," Pappoe stated in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports. "The man has been given a job to do, and he - Benjamin Asare - is doing the job, so what is our point?"
Pappoe emphasized that Asare has fulfilled his primary responsibility perfectly, noting "We put him into the goalpost to make sure we don't have balls entering our net...and he is doing just that. It's not a call we should be making now."
The former GFA official's comments come as Ghana prepares for their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Comoros on Sunday, with Asare expected to start in goal as the Black Stars need just one point to secure their World Cup qualification.
