Karela United’s perfect home record came to an end on Sunday as Berekum Chelsea held them to a 1-1 draw at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale.
The hosts started brightly and took an early lead through Bless Ege, who won and converted a penalty in the ninth minute to put Karela ahead. The Green and Reds looked on course to claim all three points until their defensive frailties resurfaced once again. Chelsea drew level in the 36th minute, capitalising on a poorly defended set-piece to make it 1-1.
Karela continued to press for a winner in the second half, dominating possession with 55% of the ball compared to Chelsea’s 45%. They produced four total shots, with two on target, and forced seven corner kicks. Despite their efforts, they could not find a breakthrough. Chelsea were more efficient in attack, registering six total shots and three on target, making the most of their limited opportunities.
A key moment came in the 62nd minute when Zaidan Mohammed’s powerful free kick was punched away to safety by the Chelsea goalkeeper, a chance that could have sealed victory for Karela.
For Karela, it was a disappointing result as they dropped points at home for the first time this season, missing the chance to close in on the top of the table. Coach Nurudeen Amadu’s men, however, can take some positives from their strong attacking display.
Chelsea, on the other hand, will return to Berekum satisfied with the draw, extending their unbeaten run to two matches under Samuel Boadu. The Blues will next face defending champions Bibiani GoldStars, while Karela prepare to host Eleven Wonders.
