
Champions of the World Universities football games, the University of Development Studies, received a heroic welcome in Tamale following their return to campus.
The team returned home after their success at the FISU Universities World Football Championship in Dalian, China, to meet thousands of fans.
The players and technical team had an open bus parade through the city of Tamale with fans and indigenes chanting, singing and dancing to names of their heroic team.
UDS became the first African team to win the FISU World Championship, dethroning Brazil's Paulista University after beating them in the final a fortnight ago.
The team were first received by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Honourable Kofi Adams, at the airport before the squad had an opportunity to have dinner with President John Dramani Mahama. The President donated cash to the team and pledged to support the institution as part of his efforts to revive school sports.
Across the last eight months, UDS won the Universities games in Ghana before emerging African champions, and represented the continent alongside Moroccan University Chouaib Doukkali at the FISU championship.
