Asante Kotoko recorded their second league win of the season with a commanding 2-0 victory over defending champions Bibiani GoldStars in an outstanding match on Wednesday evening at the Baba Yara Stadium.
The fixture had been postponed due to both clubs’ participation in CAF inter-club competitions, but the Kumasi giants showed no signs of fatigue as they produced a dominant performance to maintain their unbeaten start after three matches.
Peter Amidu Acquah opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a well-placed header after a flowing move down the right flank.
Striker Albert Amoah then doubled the advantage five minutes after the restart with a stunning strike into the top corner - his second goal in the league and fifth in all competitions this season. Unfortunately, Amoah was later stretchered off following a bad challenge midway through the second half.
Kotoko dictated the tempo for most of the encounter, controlling possession and creating several clear-cut chances while frustrating the champions, who failed to register a single shot on target. Goalkeeper Frederick Asare remained largely untested as Kotoko’s backline stood firm throughout the game.
Head coach Karim Zito will be pleased with his side’s growing confidence and consistency, as they continue to blend domestic duties with their continental campaign. Both teams still have a game in hand.
Next up for Kotoko is a local derby against Nations FC at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, while GoldStars will aim to bounce back when they face Vision FC.
