President John Dramani Mahama has pledged stronger government support to help talented student athletes transition into professional sports, following the University for Development Studies’ (UDS) historic triumph at the FISU World University Football Tournament in China.
During a courtesy call at the Jubilee House, the President announced plans to establish a School Sports Authority to coordinate sports development across all educational levels â from basic to tertiary â as part of efforts to build a structured pathway for young athletes.
“My government, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ministry of Education, is working to strengthen youth and university sports systems to ensure that talented students or athletes are identified, developed and supported to reach professional levels,” Mahama said.
UDS, who became the first African university to win the global football tournament, presented their trophy to the President during the visit.
The team’s achievement has been widely celebrated as a milestone for Ghanaian university sports.
Mahama also presented a GHC500,000 cash reward to the team for their exceptional performance, which saw them recover from an early setback to defeat Brazil’s Paulista University 2-1 in the final.
The UDS squad returned home on Sunday, October 5, to a rousing reception at Kotoka International Airport, marking a proud chapter in Ghana’s sporting history.
