Ayariga questions MPs’ sincerity in galamsey fight 

Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, has questioned the sincerity of Members of Parliament (MPs) who consistently raise concerns about the illegal mining scourge, popularly known as galamsey.   

He was responding to Mr Frank Annor-Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, who had called for the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to brief the House weekly on efforts to curb the menace. 

Mr Ayariga challenged MPs to reflect on their own roles in addressing the menace in their constituencies.   

“What have you, as MPs, done in your constituencies to stop galamsey?” Mr Ayariga asked pointedly during Parliamentary proceedings on Friday.   

Mr Ayariga said his outfit had not received any report from any MP regarding his or her personal efforts to curb the menace in their constituencies. 

The Bawku Central legislator asserted that many MPs who frequently speak about the problem were “pretending as if they care about galamsey,” stressing that genuine commitment must go beyond rhetoric in the chamber.   

Mr Ayariga’s remarks highlighted growing tensions in Parliament over the fight against illegal mining, which continues to pose environmental, social, and economic challenges across the country.
