Some 4,000 Ghanaian students educated on ECOWAS to combat irregular migration

Media Response, a nongovernmental organization committed to promoting socio-economic development through advocacy, communications, and social mobilization, has educated 4,000 Ghanaian students on the significance of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) integration efforts.

The initiative, which aimed at promoting regional unity and reducing irregular migration, was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, and the Ghana Education Service.

The programme did not only inform students about ECOWAS integration efforts but also to empower them with knowledge about the potential benefits of regional cooperation.

Addressing participants, Mr. Samuel Dodoo, Executive Director of Media Response noted that understanding the economic and social opportunities that ECOWAS integration offered, students could appreciate the value of staying within their home countries and contributing to their development.

The sessions included interactive discussions, providing students with a platform to ask questions and engage with experts on various aspects of regional integration.

Topics such as trade, security, and free movement within the ECOWAS member states were highlighted, fostering a sense of belonging and shared identity among participants.

“This programme addresses the pressing issue of irregular migration by equipping our youth with information about the opportunities available within ECOWAS,” Mr. Dodoo said. “Our goal is to inspire them to envision a future where they can thrive in their own country while actively participating in West Africa’s regional growth.”

He also noted that the programme would equip students and Ghanaian youth with knowledge and understanding about ECOWAS and their responsibilities.

“I know many of you (students) have read about ECOWAS, so we expect you to share what you know about it,” he said.

He indicated that ECOWAS had various protocols and agreements signed by heads of state, aimed at benefiting citizens. “I can assure you that ECOWAS is a very good organization and institution,” he added.

The session included presentations on ECOWAS institutions, their structure, and the various organizations within ECOWAS.

As the students concluded the sessions, many expressed newfound enthusiasm for their region, recognizing the vital role they play in shaping its future.

This collaborative effort represents a promising step toward fostering informed and proactive citizens who can contribute to a more integrated and prosperous West Africa.

Media Response collaborates with various state and non-state actors on programmes in health, education, human rights, peacebuilding, governance, ICTs, ECOWAS free movement, migration, safety, and environmental concerns.

Notable partners include the Ghana HIV & AIDS Network, Stop TB Ghana Partnership, Ghana Health Service, and the International Organization for Migration.
