Ghana’s celebrated Kente fabric has officially earned Global Geographical Indication (GI) protection, a landmark achievement that not only preserves the authenticity of this centuries-old textile but also opens new doors for cultural tourism.
The GI status, launched by Ghana’s Registrar General’s Department in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization, ensures that only Kente woven by Ghanaian artisans can bear the prestigious name. This move follows Kente’s 2020 inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, underscoring its global cultural significance.
With GI recognition now in place, Kente is poised to become a stronger draw for international visitors seeking immersive cultural experiences in Ghana. The development is expected to boost artisan communities and inspire more heritage-driven tourism and placing Ghana firmly on the map as a destination.
